In 2015, Pieter received one of the industry’s highest honours when he was named Global Business Events Executive of the Year by the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), the world’s largest business events association. He is also a recipient of the SAACI Best Conference & Event Organiser Award and has been recognised internationally for his contribution to professional excellence, leadership and industry development.
Pieter holds two of the most respected professional credentials in the global meetings and events profession: the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation and the Certification in Meeting Management (CMM). These credentials reflect advanced competence in event strategy, leadership, business management and event execution at an international level.
Prior to establishing ConfSA in 1998, Pieter served in senior roles within the South African Government, including the Ministry of Health and the Directorate of International Health Liaison, where he managed multilateral affairs, diplomatic engagement and high-level international programmes. This experience provided a unique foundation in governance, protocol, stakeholder management and strategic communication that continues to influence his approach to event leadership today.
Beyond consulting and event management, Pieter has become widely respected as an educator and mentor. Over the past 25 years, he has developed and delivered professional development programmes, workshops, masterclasses and executive learning experiences attended by more than 600 event professionals from across Africa and beyond. His passion for professional development ultimately led to the establishment of the School for the Art & Science of Event Management, where he serves as Founder, Lead Instructor and Chairman of the School Council.… The School’s flagship programme, Event Architecture® Principles of Event Management in Practice™, reflects Pieter’s belief that professional competence develops through the integration of theory, practical application, reflection and experience. The programme was designed to provide aspiring and practising event professionals with the knowledge, skills and confidence required to succeed in an increasingly complex global environment. Pieter currently serves on various academic and industry advisory structures and has contributed to curriculum development, professional standards discussions and industry advancement initiatives throughout his career. His work continues to focus on developing the next generation of event professionals while supporting organisations and destinations in creating events that deliver measurable value and lasting impact. Today, Pieter remains committed to a simple but powerful belief: Events have the power to change people, organisations, communities and destinations. Professional event management ensures those opportunities are realised responsibly, efficiently, and effectively.
The School for the Art & Science of Event Management
Internationally informed. Industry grounded. Delivered by award-winning professionals
Event management sits at the centre of a dynamic and constantly evolving world. While the core principles of professional event management remain remarkably consistent, their application changes continuously in response to shifting audiences, technologies, formats, risks, expectations and global realities.
This creates a real challenge for both emerging and established event professionals: where can one access credible, relevant and professionally grounded education that reflects the realities of the industry today?
The School for the Art & Science of Event Management was established to answer that need.
Our programmes are grounded in international standards for professional event management and delivered by award-winning practitioners recognised by the industry for exceptional achievement. We believe that meaningful professional education for the event industry should be developed by the industry, delivered by experienced professionals, and designed to strengthen competence in real-world practice.
The School’s programmes are universally applicable, independent in outlook, international in faculty, and relevant to learners across diverse event environments and career stages.
Our Learning Pathway
Event Architecture® Principles of Event Management in Practice™ (EAPoEMiP) is our flagship baseline programme. It focuses on the tactical foundations of professional event management and provides candidates with a structured, practical and defensible framework for planning and delivering events with clarity, confidence and control.
This foundation is strengthened through a growing series of specialist short courses designed for professionals who wish to deepen their competence in focused areas of practice, leadership and decision-making.
At the highest level, the School presents once-off international masterclasses led by visiting global thought leaders. These masterclasses explore specialised components of event management, event design and professional practice, offering senior professionals fresh perspectives and advanced insight into the future of the industry.
Learning Outcomes
One word consistently emerges in describing the value of our programmes:
TRANSFORMATIONAL.
Our participants represent a broad cross-section of the event management ecosystem, including professional conference organisers, associations, venues, destination marketing organisations, suppliers, government entities, production specialists, entrepreneurs and corporate event teams. Despite their varied backgrounds and levels of experience, a common theme remains evident in their feedback: the programmes fundamentally change the way they think about, approach and deliver events.
Participants frequently describe gaining:
Greater clarity and confidence in professional practice
Structured methodologies for planning and decision-making
A deeper understanding of the event ecosystem
Improved operational efficiency and control
Enhanced strategic thinking and problem-solving ability
Stronger leadership and stakeholder management capability
A more professional, defensible and globally aligned approach to event management
Beyond technical competence, many learners describe a shift in mindset, moving from reactive event coordination to intentional, strategic event leadership grounded in internationally informed best practice and real-world application.
